Hi, I’m Dr. Tanner Schuh, chiropractor and owner of Alleviate Chiropractic and Wellness. I recently became certified in contemporary cupping methods through the International Cupping Therapy Association (ICTA), and I’m excited to offer this powerful therapy in our office.

You’ve probably seen the telltale circular marks on athletes or friends who’ve had cupping, but what’s really going on? Let’s break it down.

What is cupping?

Cupping is a therapeutic technique that uses suction to gently lift the skin and underlying tissues. This negative pressure helps improve blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and support the body’s natural healing processes. While cupping has been used for thousands of years, modern techniques make it safer and more effective than ever.

How does cupping work?

When suction is applied, it draws blood and lymphatic fluids toward the surface, which can help flush out waste and bring fresh nutrients to the area. This boost in circulation can decrease pain, reduce stiffness, and improve mobility. Many people find relief either immediately or in the days following treatment.

What can cupping help with?

Research suggests cupping can provide relief for:

  • Muscle tightness and soreness

  • Low back and neck pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Sports injuries

  • Stiffness and restricted movement

While cupping isn’t a stand-alone cure, it works well as part of a comprehensive care plan alongside chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue work.

What do the cupping marks mean?

The circular marks that appear after cupping aren’t bruises in the traditional sense. They’re a result of stagnant blood and toxins being drawn to the surface as circulation improves. The color and intensity of the marks can vary based on tissue tightness and congestion, and they typically fade within a few days. These marks are often a normal and harmless part of the body’s healing response.

Is cupping safe?

Cupping is generally very safe when performed by a trained provider. A thorough assessment should be done beforehand to make sure cupping is the right fit for you. Some people may experience mild soreness or skin discoloration, but serious side effects are rare.

A quick note

Cupping isn’t for everyone, and it’s important to have the right assessment before beginning treatment. If you’ve been curious about cupping or want to see if it could help you feel better and move more freely, I’d love to help.
