Over the past decade, dry needling has skyrocketed in popularity, becoming a go-to treatment for musculoskeletal pain. Backed by growing research, wider use among practitioners, and rising patient demand, this powerful technique is making waves in the world of pain relief!

So what is dry needling? Why does it help?

Dry needling is a manual therapy technique incorporating the use of thin, sterile, mono-filament needles into muscles or connective tissue to alleviate pain, increase range of motion, and improve overall function in the targeted area. Additionally, practitioners may use electrical stimulation with dry needling to enhance the effectiveness of treatment. As a chiropractor, incorporating dry needling into my standard practice has been life-changing not only for me but for my patients who continually experience its many benefits. So how does it work? When a muscle is overused, it can enter an "energy crisis," where it doesn't receive enough blood supply. This lack of oxygen and nutrients prevents the muscle from returning to its resting state. As a result, the tissue around the trigger point becomes more acidic, sensitizing the nerves and causing pain. Dry needling helps restore normal blood flow, releasing tension and flushing out waste. The needle also stimulates nerve fibers, prompting the brain to release endorphins, which act as natural pain relievers (Cleveland Clinic, n.d.).
