Let’s face it, whether you’re glued to your desk or constantly on your feet, the workday can be tough on your spine. The good news? A few simple changes can make a world of difference. Start by setting up an office space that supports your body ergonomically: keep your feet flat, your monitor at or slightly below eye level, and your chair supporting your lower back with a lumbar support. Put your computer keyboard in front of you so your wrists and forearms are in line and your shoulders are relaxed, and adjust your chair height so that your hips are in line with your knees. Don’t forget to move around! Get up every 30 minutes to stretch or walk, even if it’s just a quick lap around your desk. Movement can reset your posture, your muscles, and even your mind.
Yes, posture matters, too! Sit with your shoulders back, your core slightly engaged, and avoid slouching (even when you’re tired). Stretching before or during your day can work wonders, focus on loosening up your neck, shoulders, and lower back. And if you’re using a standing desk, make sure you switch between sitting and standing a few times throughout the day!
Lastly, pay attention to repetitive movements and make adjustments to reduce strain. If your job involves repetitive tasks, try to switch up your routine or use proper techniques to prevent overuse injuries. At some point during your day, whether it’s after work or during a quick break, try using a foam roller to relieve tension and relax your muscles.
